Avast SecureLine VPN 2023

Avast SecureLine VPN 2023 + Activation key Free Download

A fast VPN ensures that you don’t have to wait long for web pages to load. After all, you don’t want your Netflix to have to constantly buffer because of your VPN connection. We have therefore tested Avast SecureLine VPN for speed so that you know what to expect from this VPN.

Speedtest results Avast SecureLine VPN

To determine the actual speed of Avast SecureLine, we tested this VPN via Speedtest.net. Below you can see the results of our internet connection when testing Avast SecureLine. These tests were conducted from the Netherlands and covered both Avast SecureLine’s Dutch and US servers. As a blank test, we also tested our internet speed without VPN.

Link Ping Download Speed (Mbps) Upload Speed (Mbps)
Without VPN 2 ms 203.31 246.75
Dutch Avast SecureLine server 4 ms 196.83 138.47
American Avast SecureLine server 95ms 193.88 37.72

Compared to the baseline measurement, the ping of the Dutch server has increased slightly, and the download speed and upload speed have decreased slightly. However, this is minimal; there is almost no noticeable difference in speed. It is striking that the download speed of the American server has also not decreased much. We expected this since internet traffic has to travel a great distance and is routed across the United States.

The upload speed has decreased considerably, but this is of little importance for daily internet use. The ping has increased a lot, which also makes sense. This is less nice for gaming, among other things.

Speed in everyday use

The results of the speed test are of course only relevant if they match the user experience. That is why we tested Avast SecureLine in practice for a longer period.

avast secureline vpn review 5

We did not experience any noticeable problems while browsing. Web pages loaded quickly and without any issues. Streaming also went well in most cases. Spotify worked without any hitches and videos on YouTube hardly had to load either. Netflix also works fine with Avast SecureLine servers.

Downloading was also fairly easy with the dedicated P2P servers. Retrieving files from e-mails was done in an instant. Downloading torrents also works well with this VPN. Although the Dutch server did not give us access to The Pirate Bay, we were able to download it quickly with an American server. Online gaming also worked well with no difference from our normal internet experience.

Conclusion speed Avast SecureLine VPN

  • Avast SecureLine is a VPN with very good speeds.
  • The upload and download speeds are hardly affected by the Dutch and American servers.
  • We noticed little difference in speed while browsing, downloading, gaming,, and streaming.

Security – How secure is Avast SecureLine VPN?

In general, the rule of thumb is: a secure VPN is a good VPN. After all, many people use a VPN to protect their online security and privacy. That is why we also check all providers that we test for their safety. Among other things, we look at the protocols used and the logging policy. These are our findings about Avast SecureLine.

Protocols

Avast SecureLine VPN uses rock-solid AES 256-bit encryption. In addition, Avast SecureLine works with various protocols, such as OpenVPN, IPsec,, and IKEv2. The protocol used for your connection depends on your operating system:

Operating system protocol used
Windows OpenVPN (UDP)
Mac IP sec
Android OpenVPN (UDP)
iOS IPsec/IKEv2

Something to be aware of when using Avast SecureLine VPN on Mac is that the IPSec protocol is not used here in combination with L2TP. Usually,, this is the case because this makes the protocol a lot more secure. However, ‘the IPSec part’ of this combination is the part responsible for the encryption, so you can rest assured that your connection is encrypted in any case. Still, this is something to be aware of.

You can also select “Avast Mimic” in the app. This is an experimental protocol developed by Avast experts.

The protocols cannot be found directly in the app. To do this, navigate to ‘ Menu ‘, then click on ‘ Settings ‘ and then ‘ Experimental ‘. You can then select a VPN protocol.

Logging Policy and Privacy

There is a lot to be said about Avast SecureLine’s logging policy and the way parent company Avast handles privacy. First of all, we examined what is actually in the privacy policy of the VPN service. Avast promises never to store your complete IP address, DNS requests,, or activity logs, for example,, your search history and transfer data such as emails, photos,, and other data that you download or upload over the Internet.

The company does collect information to make its service work. This is beyond most good VPN services. First of all, Avast needs certain information to create an account for you. This includes an e-mail address, username, password,, and payment method. In addition, Avast stores even more information about you when you use the SecureLine service:

  • The times you connected
  • The ‘subnet’ of your real IP address (this is almost your entire IP, except for the last few digits)
  • The IP address of the VPN server used
  • The amount of data used

This information can be very sensitive. Although Avast does not store your entire IP address, it does know most of your IP. Only the last few digits are anonymized. This means that Avast knows approximately where you are. The above data is stored for thirty days. Information about your operating system, the version of the VPN software you use,, and options you adjust within the software (such as activating the kill switch) is even stored for two years.

In addition, Avast SecureLine works with many external partners. In its privacy policy, Avast lists the services for which it has entered into cooperation with external partners. The company refers to the privacy policy of its partners for the processing of personal data. For example, Avast has a third-party billing partner that collects your IP address for its billing process.

The information that SecureLine collects via Android and iOS is shared with Google Firebase Analytics (anonymized), Google Fabric Crashlytics (not personally traceable),, and AppsFlyer Analytics (for tracking marketing campaigns).

At the bottom of its privacy policy, Avast SecureLine informs you that it may share your data with other parties if there are legal obligations to do so. All in all, Avast SecureLine cannot offer you anonymity.

Avast resold personal data

While Avast SecureLine VPN doesn’t operate with the same privacy policies as the rest of Avast’s multi-million dollar company, it’s still worth checking out how the parent company handles its users’ privacy. Namely, an Avast subsidiary sold the browsing history of free users of Avast’s antivirus program to third parties. Although this data does not belong to Avast’s VPN users, this discovery is concerning. This does not give the company any advantages when it comes to privacy and security.

kill switch

Avast SecureLine has a built-in kill switch. You can activate this within the settings of the software. To do this, click on ‘ Menu ‘ and then on ‘ Settings ‘. Then go to the ‘ VPN mode ‘ tab. Click the box before ‘ Activate Kill Switch ‘ to activate the kill switch. A kill switch ensures that your entire internet connection is stopped as soon as your VPN connection drops. This means you never accidentally leak personal or sensitive information.

What data does Avast SecureLine VPN need?

When you create an account with Avast SecureLine, you must provide several details. You will also receive various ID tags that are linked to your account. For example, we are talking about:

  • Email (for communication and invoices)
  • User name
  • License key to activate your subscription
  • Date of the expiry of your subscription
  • Information about trial periods

The above data is kept for as long as you use the service, and often for several years afterward. In many cases, this is to make the service work properly. You can use an anonymized email address and username to protect your privacy.

Conclusion Security Avast SecureLine VPN

  • Avast SecureLine VPN uses the OpenVPN (UDP), IPSec, and IKEv2 protocols, depending on the operating system you use.
  • Avast SecureLine’s logging policy is problematic: IP addresses are partially logged, as is much other information.
  • Avast SecureLine does not track users’ browser activity and DNS requests.
  • Avast free users’ browsing data has been sold to third parties in the past.
  • Avast SecureLine has a built-in kill switch.
  • To create an account, Avast SecureLine requires an email address and username.
